Country Profiles: Coral Sea Islands

Coral Sea Islands are located off the coast of Australia in Oceania.

Scattered over more than three-quarters of a million square kilometers of ocean, the Coral Sea Islands were declared a territory of Australia in 1969. They are uninhabited except for a small meteorological staff on the Willis Islets. Automated weather stations, beacons, and a lighthouse occupy many other islands and reefs.

The islands have an area of less than 3 sq km.

The Coral Sea Islands do not share a border with other countries because it is a string of islands. It is mostly sand and coral reefs and islands (or cays).



There are no indigenous inhabitants of Coral Sea Islands. There is only a staff of three to four at the meteorological station on Willis Island.

The country's official name is Coral Sea Islands Territory. There is no capital. There is no economy on the island. Since it is a territory of Australia, it shares Australia's flag.
